The Blue Card: Everything you need to know

The Blue Card is a successful permit to attract the best professional talent, which offers significant advantages for their integration into German life. We tell you here what this permit is about, the criteria for obtaining it according to the two different types of the card, which are the most significant advantages, and how we at Starcon can help to ensure that you can make the most of this option without complications.

Applicants with a university degree, a job offer related to their field of qualification, and a salary of 58,400 euros per year (as of 2023) are eligible for the Blue Card. There is also a Blue Card with looser eligibility requirements if the field of employment is one of those in which Germany has a shortage of personnel, e.g. IT specialists, engineers, mathematicians, natural scientists, physicians, etc. In that case, you may qualify for a blue card with an annual salary of 45,552 euros.

The Blue Card has advantages for the person who holds it and their family. Perhaps the most important advantage of this type of residence permit is that it allows the holder to apply for a settlement permit in Germany (Niederlassungerlaubnis) after 33 months of working here. In addition, the spouse can obtain their family reunification permit much simpler. Thanks to these advantages, it becomes possible for Blue Card holders and their employers to plan for a long-term future in Germany. In fact, in a recent report by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) 83% of Blue Card holders are still living in Germany after 5 years!

Thanks to our more than 15 years of experience at Startcon we will gladly help you or your employees to apply for the Blue Card. If necessary, we also support with the application for degree recognition to the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) and follow up with authorities on the status of your application. If you need help with house finding, we are also happy to support you in any way. With our extensive knowledge of the process and relevant stakeholders, we ensure that the process goes as smoothly and quickly as possible.
